Throughout my life, people have always been reluctant to talk about personal finances. Even when growing up, my mother told my that you don't talk to others about your/their current financial situation. Even among my coworkers over the years, this isn't usually discussed. But why? Here are some reasons I can think of:
- When talking to people in poverty, the conversation is just flat out uncomfortable
- Social taboo (especially for the generations before me)
- People inflate their numbers sometimes because social media makes people feel like you need to live a "lavish" lifestyle
- Once you reach a certain level of success, it feels harder for people to relate to you
